Platelet-activating factor type activity in plasma from patients with septicemia and other diseases

The purpose of the present study was to determine whether increased levels of platelet-activating factor (PAF) type activity can be detected in plasma from patients with septicemia and other diseases. A level of PAF below 0.5 ng/mL of plasma was considered normal. We found that plasma from a patient with adverse anaphylactoidic reaction to intravenous analgetics contained 2.1 ng PAF/mL. In seven patients with septicemia, including urosepsis, endocarditis and peritonitis, and with positive blood culture, increased plasma PAF levels (1-20 ng PAF/mL) were observed. Age-related changes in linoleic acid bioconversion by isolated hepatocytes from spontaneously hypertensive and normotensive rats

This study points out the hepatocyte interconversion of the linoleic acid family during hypertension. Hepatocyte delta 6 desaturase activity was higher in 1 month-old spontaneously hypertensive rats than in normotensive controls. A similar tendency was observed in 6 month-old SHR. delta 5 desaturase activity was higher only in 1 month-old spontaneously hypertensive rats as compared to controls. Desaturase activities were particularly high at the age of 6 months. Mitochondrial compartment: a possible target of cadmium effects on breast epithelial cells.

Cadmium–breast epithelial cell interactions were studied by analyzing some mitochondria-related aspects of stress response. We treated immortalized non-tumor breast cells with 5 or 50 μM CdCl2 for 24 or 96 h demonstrating that the exposure did not cause a significant mitochondrial proliferation, while it induced a significant increase in the respiratory activity and mitochondrial polarization. In addition, we found that hsp60 was up-regulated while hsp70 and COXII and COXIV were down-regulated. Effect of simvastatin on desaturase activities in liver from lean and obese zucker rats

The effect of simvastatin, a hypocholesterolemic drug, on the biosynthesis of arachidonic acid was studied in obese and lean Zucker rats. After administration of 2 mg/kg body weight/d for 13 d, delta 6 and delta 5 desaturase activities were measured in liver microsomes at two substrate concentrations. In untreated rats, the delta 6 desaturation rate was similar in the obese and lean rats when measured at saturating substrate levels, whereas delta 5 desaturation was lower in the obese animals. Influence of spontaneous hypertension on n-3 delta-6-desaturase activity and fatty acid composition of rat hepatocytes.

The first and rate limiting step in the conversion of alpha-linolenic acid is catalyzed by the delta-6-desaturase enzyme. The activity of such an enzyme was studied in order to investigate the n-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid biogenesis during hypertension. Four different age groups (1, 3, 6 and 12 months) were considered in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats. Experimental Testicular Torsion: Effect on Endocrine and Exocrine Function and Contralateral Testicular Histology

In order to investigate whether unilateral testicular torsion exerts a negative influence on the previously undisturbed contralateral side, exocrine and endocrine testicular function were evaluated before and two months after torsion. A rat model with 6 hours', 12 hours' or permanent extravaginal 540 degrees torsion of the right testis was used; a sham operated group of animals served as controls.
